The Ritz London Hotel's History

Established by renowned Swiss hotelier César Ritz, The Ritz London established itself as one of very few hotels to be popular amongst the privileged individuals of its time; particularly prominent actors, socialites and the Royal Family. As the hotel was adorned with enviable furnishings and interiors that reflected the fact that no expense was spared even at the beginning of the venue’s conception, it’s understandable that The Ritz was London’s most prestigious hotel.

Amongst the esteemed guests who have stayed at The Ritz London since it first opened its are King Edward VII, Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and actor Charlie Chaplin. During World War II, Charles de Gaulle, Winston Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower met in the hotel’s Marie Antoinette Suite, to discuss strategies. Sir Roger Moore also received his knighthood at the prestigious hotel in 2003; Roger was addressed as Mister when he arrived but left as Sir.

Famous Films

In 1999, the cult classic Notting Hill, which starred Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, was released in cinemas. The film featured the interiors of the hotel’s Trafalgar Suite, which was used as the setting for the well-known press conference scene. Michael deCozar, currently Head Hall Porter at The Ritz, even made an appearance in the film during the concierge desk scene!

Royal Recognition

Awarded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2002, The Ritz London has attained a Royal Warrant for Banqueting and Catering Services. It is the first and only hotel to ever gain this honour. The exclusive hotel’s royal associations do not end there. HM Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Golden Jubilee, which marked 50 years on the throne, at The Ritz later that year.
